Green man! One of the most recognizable and well known of the male god figures in the Celtic belief system. May Day was originally an ancient Celtic holiday known as Beltane. At this time of year, the Green Man awakens from his slumber below the Earth, and emerges as a symbol of life and fertility returning to the land. Formed from leaves that beckon his return to the surface world, the Green Man is truly a god of nature. Through the season, his symbolic natural life flourishes and wanes with the advent of Samhain, which is now called Halloween, where all life makes it's return to the underworld and sleeps until nature's cycle returns once again to the eternal renewal dance of the year once again.
