The large version here is not huge, but very solid with nice weight and presence at around the size of a quarter, or one inch in diameter excluding the chain bail. The smaller one still has a solid feel at more like 3/4" or the diameter of a penny for reference.
This is a very classic and traditional Celtic knot pattern symbolizing protection due to the single strand nature of the design. One complete repeating closed loop embodies insulation from outside negative forces. In the Realm of Celtic belief, this would not likely refer as much to physical forces, but more as protection from the unseen forces of nature and beyond that can negatively effect our lives. That said, the "shield" name is in reference to the bronze age shields which bear this pattern which was formed from pounding bronze sheet from the back to raise the design on the front of the metal surface (primal repousse metalsmithing). I practice a variety of forms of etching and engraving to create these pieces, so a little different technique in my studio :)
